VIDEO: Flyboarding launches in Cairns, Australia.

Flyboarding in Cairns, Australia
I came across a video of a water powered jet pack on YouTube a while ago and instantly thought I had to try it. While I was looking for the video again to show my girlfriend I saw another video about something called Flyboarding, the video thumbnail showed a person with water jets coming out from under his feet……. I excitedly clicked it. We watched in amazement as these guys flipped, dolphin dived and generally just glided through the water in what can only be described as an Ironman/dolphin hybrid-like manner. We looked at each other knowing that we had to try flyboarding, and soon.

I searched for it but it was relatively rare in Australia (for now). I was sure it wouldn’t be long before this epic water sport started popping up everywhere here. Little did I know that two entrepreneurial ex-dive instructors from Cairns were already onto it. I found this out when I got a call from a friend of mine at Brand Tree Creative telling me about a new, exciting product they were working on and that I had to catch up with them and get involved. Sure enough it was then that I found out Flyboarding was coming to Cairns!

The idea was that we were to work with them to make a promo video for the launch party in the coming weeks and to do so would need to spend the day on luxury charter boat Aroona, with 4 jet skis, 20 people and a whole load of water toys. My job, get a lot of GoPro footage and just generally have fun and help others do the same. I was most certainly happy to oblige. I invited a few people along for the ride but couldn’t tell them what it was at first so some didn’t come but those that did, had an epic day and those that didn’t probably won’t say no next time. Personally I think this is one of the coolest adventure activities in Cairns and certainly one of the best things I’ve done.

I created a small GoPro video teaser below that show what they can do so I hope you enjoy it.
So how exactly does a flyboard work? Think of the power used to propel a Jet Ski (in our case Kawasaki’s from Trinity Kawasaki), the engine draws the water through the Jet Ski’s intake and then pushes it out the back to propel the craft. They’ve created 180 degree pipe that takes the place of the steering mechanism on the Jet Ski, attaches to a 18m long hose and the water that would usually be used to propel the Jet Ski is forced through the pipe to the bottom of the board you’re strapped into (like wake board bindings) and redirected downwards to give you upwards thrust. The outcome is as close to what I can think it would be like to have an iron man suit, or at least the legs. The Flyboard itself has it’s own floatation so keeps you afloat if you’re not under power.

I’d highly recommend giving this a go, it was a lot easier than I expected to get up the first time, especially if you’ve done any board sports before. As far as I know they start you at around 3 thousand revs, which gets you about 3 to 4 meters out of the water depending on your weight. After 10 hours flight time you can go unlimited, which is anywhere over 6 thousand revs and can get you over 10 meters! Make sure the boots are done up as tight as possible though because it all comes down to the movement of your feet. Flights take off from Palm Cove between 8am and 6pm Wednesdays to Sundays.
